Thomas and Margaret had nine children, seven lived to adulthood. Twins were lost due to a miscarriage. The story is told that Margaret fell from an apple tree while picking apples bringing on premature labor. The twins were said to be buried underneath the elms trees that were next to Shock Road. The 1900 census states that Margaret had nine children, seven of whom were living so the family story must be relatively accurate.

Just a few months after the 1900 census taking, tragedy struck with the death of the eldest son James at age 22. Six years later the second son John died at age 26. Both Laura and Joe died in their middle years, Laura at 58 and Joe at 48. There deaths were only a week apart in 1940. Margaret lived to be 72, Tom was 80 when he died and Mary lived to be 97.

Based on the reminiscences of Harold and Betty O'Neill, compiled by Teresa (Terry) O'Neill.
